The sun has settled behind the green hills, the stars started to appear in the dark moonless sky, to join the dance of the burning ashes in the light breeze… The forest was silent except from the cracking wood, while the flames licked the three bodies over the careful build pyre. In front of the ceremonial fire, a single man was standing. Tall and fair, his hands resting over his Celtic battle axe in front of him, supporting him against the ground. His posture proud but the grief obvious on his face, his green eyes watery, but he didn’t allow any tear to drop. He already said his goodbyes and the words of honor and now there was nothing left then staring at the flames that were taking his pack to their last place of rest.
“Stay strong.” A deep voice echoed and suddenly a young looking rugged but proud nonetheless lion appeared sitting next to the man, his feline dark eyes staring into the flames.
“Strong? How can you ask me for that right now? Don’t you see this? Don’t you see my family burning?” The man turned his eyes at the lion, the grip over his axe tightening. But the lion remain silent and still. Instead a soft voice could be heard from near his legs.
“We see.. I know, and I’m so sorry Oscar O’Neil.” A beautiful red fox nuzzled his leg affectingly before looking up at him with the brilliant yellow eyes. “But.. You can not stop. Do you really want their death to be in vein?”
“You must stay strong, like your family had centuries now. We must find the last pure one. You must find it and stop the end.” The lion added smugly.
The man lowered his stare with shame before raising it at the flames again, his posture determinate now.
“No. I will not allow that. I will finish my mission and bring the glory to my family. Every drop of blood spilled, every pain will only fuel the quest. Nothing will stand in my path and if something will.. Death will determinate the outcome.” His last words were accompanied by a strong howl echoing from the darkness of the forest and soon one more, less graceful, high-pinched howl joined in. Oscar stood tall letting the songs crawl into his soul but then he sighed.
“But… But I’m afraid.. That I will not manage to make too many steps all alone.”
“Your wisdom is evident. But your faith is doubtable Oscar O’Neil.” The fox responded with her soft voice. “You think I’m going to leave you alone? Is that what you think of us?” The man looked at the fox then lowered his stare with a shadow of shame. But before he could say anything the lion’s voice echoed again.
“You will have a pack again. Some are already on the path, although they don’t know it yet.” The great cat didn’t turn his eyes from the flames not even for a moment. “Your paths will cross soon.”
Oscar looks at the lion and the fox that now moved and sit between the lion’s huge front paws. “I will wait for them.”
The lion and the fox nodded slightly before they both simply disappear. The howling stopped as well.. Leaving the man all alone in the dark forest. The only source of light was the pyre and the hope of the new beginning.
Both of those lights, red and scorching.
