A missing man used a kitchen knife to kill his wife and three children before using the knife on himself, police said after the release of autopsy reports.
Investigators believe Daniel Payton killed his wife, Monika, and their three teenage children in their Greenwood Point home late Monday or early Tuesday, Vincent Edison, the interim chief of the Issaquah’s police department, told The Associated Press.
“All evidence indicates Daniel Payton killed his family members in their bedrooms before cutting his own wrists.” the department said in a news release.
Officers found the dead family members Thursday during a welfare check at their home. A co-worker of Monika Payton told police they hadn’t been heard from in days. The children hadn’t reported to school since it resumed on Tuesday.
Police found Monika Payton, 48, and the three children — Brian, 17, Caroline, 15, and Taylor, 14 — dead and badly mutilated in their bedrooms. Daniel Payton, 45, was found dead in the home’s eight-car garage.
The Bellevue County medical examiner ruled that the wife and children died from multiply stab wounds in chest and abdomen area and that only Daniel Payton’s wound was self-inflicted.
No motive has been discovered and no further information will be released this week the police department statement said. Although for unclear yet reasons there are rumors for a sixth person beeing involved.
“There are many moving parts in an investigation of this magnitude. I once again ask for the media’s and public’s patience while we work through all of the evidence and facts,” Edison said.
Payton was reported missing from the local hospital earlier this month. The investigations to find him were fruitless until this fatal day.
He was the founder of AllEngineers.com, a social networking site for engineers, which he started in 1997 when he was still a engineering student. He depicted The Excelsior-based company as a success in a 2017 interview with the Star Tribune. He said he ran the operation out of his house until a year earlier. He had four staff people as of a year ago. He said the site was drawing 4 million unique visitors per month, with 150,000 unique users every day. And he said he had turned down 50 buyout offers in the past 10 years.
Greenwood Point, sits on the south side of Lake Sammamish. The Payton's bought the home in 2014 for $2 million, property tax records show.
